Establishing data visualization excellence

The Information is Beautiful Awards program has been recognizing data visualization works and creators for over a decade. This prestigious program has launched careers, set new standards, and created a repository of design inspiration.

The professional association for data visualization

The Data Visualization Society (DVS) is a 501c3 non-profit professional association with three key objectives: to nurture, advance, and celebrate the field of data visualizations (data viz). Since its founding in 2019, their community has grown to 30,000 members from over 160 countries.

Solution Overview

Collaborating with the Programs Director, Event Manager, and volunteers, I led the communications efforts for the Awards program. I created and published all major announcements across 4 social media channels, 2 email lists, 2 websites, and 1 Slack community.

The final winners across 16 categories are announced during a live ceremony. To bring the ceremony experience to the public, we also announce them on social media. I worked with two volunteers to publish the results per category. The post above shows the bronze, silver, and gold winner for the Business Analytics category. In addition, I led the team to prepare the design assets before the ceremony.

There are many phases in the Awards, such as release of the longlist and shortlist. This creates a demanding timeline for us to release communications to submitters, the public, and our audience.

One of my proudest contributions to the Awards was reviving a digital badge that winners used to mark their achievements. I worked with a volunteer to create the design and the community proudly displayed it alongside their work.

The Awards includes a mini-conference comprised of speakers part of the shortlist. I oversaw the entire process of editing and finalizing the videos to publish on YouTube for public release.
